Hearing the plan for seat items being disabled for the tournament got me thinking why not have a way for them to be disabled at any time during a spar or something so someone without a seat item against a player that has one can see who is truly stronger for the sake of that i'll call it a grudge match 
when someone sends a spar you have the option to check "disable seat items" and when the challenge is sent the player is alerted to the rules of the fight

or instead the item holders get a option to disable it for a bit for like 10 minutes or so
that way they choose to fight a battle without it
